what Is baptIsm?
Baptism is an identification event. Going under the water symbolizes the death of Jesus. Coming up out of the water represents the resurrection of Jesus. When we go under the water, it’s symbolic of the fact that we have died to ourselves and self-centered living. When we come back out of the water we are symbolizing our new life in Jesus!
Going public with our faith by being baptized is the first step of obedience after accepting Jesus as our Savior. It is a public expression of an inward connection.
“That’s what baptism into the life of Jesus means. When we are lowered into the water, it is like the burial of Jesus; when we are raised up out of the water, it is like the resurrection of Jesus. Each of us is raised into a light-filled world by our Father so that we can see where we’re going in our new grace-sovereign country.” – Romans 6:3-5
